This concert will premiere a new art song of mine, a setting of the poem "Heiss mich nicht reden" from Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship (Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre), commissioned by the Mannes Sounds Festival for this occasion. It will be joined by an additional Goethe setting by my good friend and colleague Keaton Hoy, as well as numerous Goethe settings from composers of the 19th century. Below is Mannes' official description of the event:

Two female figures, created by Goethe, inspired some of the greatest songs in musical literature. The songs of Mignon, a mysterious, tragic figure who first appears in Wilhelm Meister, have been set to music by dozens of composers. Suleika, the female voice in Goethe’s West-Eastern Divan (anthology), has similarly been appropriated by many song writers, such as Beethoven, Reichardt, Schubert, Schumann, Wolf and Fanny Mendelssohn. In addition to songs of these composers, we will present new compositions by young composers of Mannes, inspired by these lyrics.
